Welche „Bühne“ braucht Literatur, um zu begeistern?
Ein Roman braucht eigentlich keine Bühne, er ist gar nicht dafür konzipiert, sondern will den stillen Leser erreichen, der seine empfundene Begeisterung dann gern mitteilt, zunehmend auch via Internet, denn es ist uns ein Bedürfnis, schöne (Lese-) erlebnisse mit anderen zu teilen. Für den Verkauf des Romans ist dies allerdings der langsame Weg, und Langsamkeit können sich Bücher heutzutage nicht mehr leisten, sie sind „von der Bühne“, ehe sie sich durchsetzen konnten. Autorenlesungen, wenn sie gut sind, können den Verkauf fördern und sind insofern eine nützliche Bühne.
Welche Rolle spielt für Sie die Inszenierung Ihrer Bücher vor Publikum?
Mein Publikum sind in der Regel Kinder und Jugendliche, der Ort ist die Schule. Ein beträchtlicher Teil meiner Hörer ist also nicht freiwillig hier – und das macht für mich einen Hauptreiz der Veranstaltung aus. Ich präsentiere meine Bücher gern, und wenn der Funke überspringt und ich tatsächlich auch die „Unfreiwilligen“ erreiche und für ein Buch begeistern kann, ist das ein erhebender Moment.
Welche Bedeutung hat die Interaktion mit dem Leser?
Lesen ist ein sehr persönlicher Akt; jemand hat eine Geschichte geschrieben, ein anderer liest sie; der sie geschrieben hat, ist mit seiner Arbeit fertig und ist hinter dem Buch verschwunden. Eine Begegnung zwischen Autor und Leser ist also eher die Ausnahme und eigentlich eine aufregende Sache: Plötzlich hat der unbekannte Leser ein Gesicht, nein, viele Gesichter, er hat Meinungen und Empfindungen, die er auch äußert. Doch auch die Autorin hat plötzlich ein Gesicht, eine Stimme, und ist vielleicht ganz anders, als sie der Leser sich vorgestellt hat; das mag verwirren oder auch ein neues Licht auf das Buch werfen.
Haben Sie den Leser beim Schreiben im Hinterkopf?
Nicht wirklich. Ich schreibe so, wie die Geschichte verlangt geschrieben zu werden. Sie muss sich dann eben ihre Leser suchen. Selbst wenn ich für jüngere Kinder schreibe und mich inhaltlich und sprachlich anpassen muss, ist kein kindlicher Leser als Instanz in meinem Hinterkopf. Immer ist es die Geschichte, die bestimmt.
Was macht für Sie den „ideale Leser“ aus?
Meine Bücher sprechen nicht die breite Masse an, und so ist „meine“ Leserin, „mein“ Leser jemand, der sorgfältig auswählt und seinem „Fund“ alle Aufmerksamkeit zukommen lässt.
